Jennifer, Founder of Disability Speaks

“My name is Jennifer, I am a young 22 year old woman that cerebral palsy. I have an amazing family that consists of three children (my older brother Jeff Jr, myself and my younger sister Erica) and two amazing parents (Tammy and Jeff Sr). My parents have told me throughout my life that I could do anything as long as I put my mind to it! I still believe that today — thank you Mom and Dad!!!!!

I will begin my last semester at Onondaga Community College on August 26, 2013. I am on track to get my Associate’s degree in the field of human service. Why that field? Because I want to help people with disabilities to make things as accessible as possible by me becoming an advocate for people with disabilities.

I started Disability Speaks (on Facebook) after looking through some of the public pages that were already established. I noticed that most of the public pages were for just for cerebral palsy or exclusive to some other impairment and/or disability. I created Disability Speaks on September 12, 2011 because I wanted to give people a place to talk without feeling like they had to have a specific disability or impairment to join the page. I decided to name it Disability Speaks because when I speak I am speaking for anyone that might have and/or has had a disability.”
