Walk and Roll Foundation

Twenty-one year-old Chelsie Hill, an inspiring dancer from the age of three, made a choice to get in a vehicle driven by a drunk driver on February 21, 2010. They hit a tree head on and the lap belt on impact severely damaged her spin, crushing her L3 vertebrae. As she lay in her hospital bed, she began to have many conversations about her situation with her father, Jon Hill, who moved in with her for 37 days of her 51day stay in the hospital. He noticed her thoughts were focused on getting her story out to others and seemed more concerned about her friends and other teens making the choice she did, rather than her condition or disability. Listening to her concerns her father then asked her if she knew what a foundation was and maybe this was her new purpose? Her answer was, “I have no idea”.

When he explained the part of being able to help other (SCI) survivors and mentioned maybe providing a wheelchair to a child who can’t afford it, the tears in her eyes said it all. They had now found a purpose. Chelsie, like all SCI survivors went through so much pain and suffering in the hospital. But getting home from the hospital was like getting home to a whole new way of life. Although this was a huge negative part of her life, she was inspiring hundreds of people and soon thousands with her positive outlook on life. A few months later, Chelsie and her father began discussing the foundation again and they put their heads together makiwalk-and-roll-access-advocateng a pact that nothing would stop them and to give up was not an option. After months of brainstorming the name Walk and Roll Foundation (Facebook) was created. It was where they did their best work, in the car traveling around Southern California speaking to schools and meeting with other (SCI) survivors.  The mission and vision of this foundation is something they needed to share with like-minded people who share their passion in order to succeed. They chose a group of board members who had been inspired by Chelsie’s story. This was not an easy task but one that has developed into an amazing Board of Directors. These board members have been following Chelsie’s Journey since the day of her accident. They have a huge passion for helping others with a spinal cord Injury.

This father/daughter duo have accomplished many things over the past couple years. This team had been an idea and talked about by Chelsie and her father for over a year and came together in August 2012. They have traveled across the country with their Rally4Reality school program speaking to students and parents about the devastating consequence of drunk and distracted driving but now in addition to their school program, Team Hotwheelz (Facebook/Twitter) performs hip-hop and other dance routines to inspire others to reach for their dreams, despite any challenges they find in life. They also will be found to perform with able body dancers to show there are really no disabilities with them only different abilities.
